Protect Your Enamel From the Dangers of Erosion

Enamel is a translucent, imperative component of a tooth. It covers the area of the tooth visible below the gums and, as such, is susceptible to stains from tobacco products and beverages such as red wine, coffee and colas. Routine dental cleanings can eliminate most surface stains. (The dentin determines the color of your teeth—from white to tints of yellow.)

At the office of Dr. Brad Hylan, our skilled professionals are experts at diagnosing dental issues as well as providing the treatment needed to maintain your excellent oral health. Our patients’ care and comfort are our top priorities, and we take as much time as you need to address your every concern and explain your options in care.

While enamel protects your teeth, it can also chip, crack and erode. Its deterioration lets sweets, and hot and cold food and beverages slip through the enamel to the nerves inside. When enamel is chipped or cracked, it doesn’t replace itself.

These factors play a fundamental role in the erosion of enamel.

  • Drinking too many fruit drinks and sodas, which contain a lot of citric and phosphoric acids. Sour foods or candy also have lots of acids. So does food high in sugar and starch.
  • Dry mouth or a low flow of saliva. Saliva dilutes acids and washes away bacteria and food particles.
  • GERD (gastroesophageal reflux disease), heartburn and bulimia.
  • Medications (vitamin C, aspirin, antihistamines).
  • Vomiting alcoholic beverages.
  • Inherited conditions.

Here are some suggestions to help protect enamel.

Use toothpaste approved by the American Dental Association.

Use a soft-bristled toothbrush.

Floss daily.

Drink acidic beverages with a straw to prevent the liquids from coming into contact with your teeth.

After a meal, swish around then swallow a mouthful of milk to nullify acids.

Chew sugar-free gum between brushings. It stimulates the salivary glands to boost up to 10 times the usual amount.
